Summer Soul Care for Busy Homeschool Moms

Oh, friend, can we just pull up a chair, take a deep breath, and talk about summer? As the weather warms up, I always feel this beautiful mix of anticipation and, if I’m being completely honest, a little bit of apprehension. We imagine these golden, sun-drenched weeks of peaceful park dates, reading on the porch, and sweet family memories.

However, as a homeschool mom who has graduated seven students and still has three busy teenagers at home, I know how quickly the unstructured days of summer can turn into organized chaos. Between shifting schedules, teen activities, and the constant hum of a full house, “Busyness” can easily become our banner.

Before I started to actively practice soul care, I rushed to please God by doing more—writing over eighty books, speaking, podcasting, and caring for my family. But I quickly learned that an overloaded schedule leads to an overloaded heart. If we want to thrive this season, we have to learn that heart happiness doesn’t depend on our external circumstances; it flows from the internal work of God’s love within us. We have to tend to the soul first so we have something beautiful to pour out.

Want to learn more about soul care and having a Happy Heart? Heart Happy: Staying Centered in God’s Love through Chaotic Circumstances will inspire you to stay tethered to the Lover of your soul. By taking time to make your heart happy in the Lord, you’ll grow closer to the Heavenly Father, fostering true transformation from the inside out. Peace and joy can be yours—no matter what life dishes up.

10 Tips to Cultivate a Happy Heart This Summer

1. Anchor Your Morning Before the Chaos Begins

Before the day makes its demands, spend those first few quiet minutes in prayer and Bible study. When I open my Explore Every Woman’s Bible in the quiet of the morning, it gets my heart happy and focused on God’s big plans rather than my own endless to-do list.

“Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.” — Psalm 90:14

2. Savor the Beauty of the Present Moment

High school years slip away so fast, and the days with our children are fleeting. Slow down enough to notice the little things—the taste of a cold snow cone on a hot afternoon, the sound of your teens laughing together, or a beautiful sunset. Savor them as gifts from a loving Father.

3. Practice Proactive Soul Care

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s stewardship. Whether it’s digging in your flower bed, taking a walk in the sunshine, or stealing fifteen minutes for a warm bath, find what refreshes your spirit and make it a priority.

4. Build Community in the Sunshine

Don’t isolate yourself in the busy summer months. Connect with other moms who share your faith and values. Meet up at a local lake, plan a casual park day, or sit on the porch together while the kids hang out. We were created for connection!

5. Keep a Daily Gratitude Journal

When the laundry piles up or summer plans fall through, our emotions can try to take over. Shift your perspective by writing down three things you are thankful for every day. Gratitude has a beautiful way of changing our outward attitudes.

6. Set Boundary Markers for Your Schedule

It is completely okay to say “no” to summer activities, co-ops, or commitments, even if they sound incredibly fun. If an activity is going to rob your home of peace, protect your family’s schedule with healthy boundaries.

7. Learn the Holy Spirit “Pivot”

When a summer day gets completely turned upside down, don’t view it as an obstacle to the day you “deserved.” View it as a divine appointment. The mess can be beautiful when we allow the mayhem to catapult us straight into God’s embrace.

8. Intentionally Schedule Sabbath Rest

Whether it’s taking an afternoon nap, reading an encouraging book, or simply meditating on a favorite scripture verse, your soul needs rest. God designed us for rhythms of rest—make sure you are honorably practicing it.

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.” — Psalm 62:1

9. Ask For and Accept Help

You cannot pour from an empty cup, friend. If you are drowning in housecleaning, meals, or carpooling, lean on your spouse, an older child, or a sweet friend. Asking for support is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.

10. Stay Anchored in the Finished Work of Christ

Remember that Jesus died so He could live a new life within us. When you face the mountains of “Rushmore” and “Do-more” this summer, you don’t have to climb them in your own strength. Access His supernatural peace and power every single day.

Words to Carry in Your Heart

  • Staying centered on God’s love is the key to everything.
  • Our outward actions should flow from the wellspring of joy within us.
  • The external must always stem from the internal.
  • Every small decision to tend the soul and turn the heart to God brings change.

A Prayer for Your Summer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of these summer months. I pray for my sweet friend reading this today. Lord, when the days feel long and the schedules feel chaotic, settle her heart in Your love. Help her to push aside the pressure to do it all, and teach her how to rest in Your embrace. Give her the grace to tend to her own soul so that she can joyfully pour into the precious lives around her. Fill our homes with Your laughter, Your peace, and Your presence this season. Amen.

Ready for a New Chapter?

Sending our kids out into the world is one of the hardest acts of trust we face as parents. We spend years praying over them, guiding them, and hoping they make choices that honor the Lord. When it comes time for them to take that next big step toward college, that surrender feels even heavier. We desperately want our children to step into a community that nurtures their faith rather than tears it down.
